I never stop being surprised by how my characters play me.
I should know better than this by now.
I’m writing (slowly, oh so slowly) my light fantasy (meaning there’s a ghost in it, I can’t really qualify it as heavy-metal/hard-core-fantasy, right?).
Anyways.
I started it as a light-hearted, fun story. Sweet, nerdish hero. Open and happy heroine. The ghost.
I was into the first few chapters when things started to be smelly. And by smelly I mean wrong.
So, I did what any novelist with salt in her brain would: I went back to my characters to see what they were hiding from me.
Holy moly (channeling Capt. Marvel here), what did I find…
My sweet and nerdy hero is an emotional train-wreck and my laid-back heroine is a loner of the purest breed.
Those two hid it all very well from me. They knew I didn’t want to go into some disastrous story that would leave me exhausted (Aidan, I’m still looking at ya), so they made me believe it was going to be easy.
They know I can’t stop writing their story now…
Well played, Noah and Becca. Well played indeed.
And now, because the story has suddenly blown up with complications, I’m back at plotting. Like, big time.

“Hell yeah! I’m not a damn cop, Ann. I’m a Marine: I have a mission, I fight, and I win. Now I don’t know who or why I’m fighting. I’m alone and I can’t let anything happen to you. You do the math.”
She took a long, calming breath. “I’m sorry Mark, but what you’ve just said is nothing more than a pile of crap.”
He looked like he would choke. “A pile of…” He ran a hand through his hair, as she’d done the night before, muttering curses under his breath. “Care for an explanation?”
“Sure.”
